Business Name Ideas: Why Coming Up With The Right Name Is So Crucial

By Todd Alan

Generating business name ideas likely gives business owners more sleep-deprived nights than any other part of setting up a new company. Business names are important, after everybody is going to call your business by that name for the remainder of its life. What you don't want is to be loaded with something you do not like, or that doesn't fit with what you do. Firms don't often survive a name change, so getting it right first time round is crucial.

It is not necessary for business name to mirror what that business does. Take Google for example, it's a worldwide brand, yet the name is made up. But examples like this are the exception rather than the rule. Talking generally, having a company name which describes, or at least hints at, the services your business provides, is of benefit.

A business name which describes a service is useful both for websites, and consumers. As an example, if you are looking online, or walking down the road, and find a company called "The Candle Shop," you could reasonably assume it sold candles. But if it had been called "Burning Bright," you could think it had been a lighting shop and not go in, because you were searching for candles. That is a missed sales opportunity for that company.

Business names can come out of anywhere, but setting up some type of business name generator process can help make a tricky decision a bit easier. Begin with the subject of the business, your name and the names of anyone else involved and see if there are any apparent business names which spring to mind. Try different combos and using the first part of one name with the second part of another. Puns are great, if they're appropriate. Avoid everything too planned, or that would be explained. If it is not immediately clear, it is not right.

Naming your company is important, but finding the right name is critical. If you're really fighting to come up with good business name ideas it will also help to get an external point of view. Regularly entrepreneurs are so close to their business they over think the impact of a potential name, while an external company can view it rationally. Naming your business is like naming a baby, so give it a name to live up to, not one it'll want to change.
