They may also have 100- 200 000 less links than their competitor. What gives?
It isn't necessarily enough to build more back links and more anchor text back links than the rest of your competition. Source quality counts. That suggests the quality of the domain that the link comes from matters. Google rewards higher trusted links with a higher page rank score. Pr0 is the lowest, pr 10 is the highest.
If Google also thinks you are over optimising or paying up for links they can also penalize you. It isn't natural to have big number of anchor text links and hardly any with your web address e.g. Www.yourdomain.com.
