Search engine marketing commonly gets confused with search engine optimization, but there is a distinct difference between the two, money. When engaging in search engine optimization there is usually no money being paid whereas search engine marketing requires you to pay in order to get access to the services you desire. $13.5 billion was spent on search engine marketing in 2008 and the amount is increasing yearly. The three largest players in search engine marketing are Google AdWords, Yahoo! Search Marketing, and Microsoft adCenter.

Google AdWords is Google's main source of income, in 2010 Google brought in $28 billion in advertising revenue. Google AdWords offers three main ways for companies to advertising, pay-per-click, cost-per-thousand advertising, and site-targeted advertising for banner or rich media ads. When using the pay-per-click system marketers choose how much they are willing to "bid" for a certain keyword, this means they set a maximum for what they are willing to pay-per-click. If there bid is high enough they will show up on Google as a sponsored link and hopefully be seen by the user. Marketers also have access to the "Google Display Network" which are sites that aren't search engines.

Google will place banner or rich media ads on these sites for you based on keywords you've entered and what Google has decided the subject of the website to be. Yahoo! Search Marketing and Microsoft adCenter both work very similarly to Google AdWords, but they don't offer users the ability to enter a "display network" like Google does.

Search engine marketing has been the subject of some controversy in the past. Users would sometimes not be able to distinguish what were organic search results and what were paid placement search results. Most search engines now make it clear which results are organic and which are sponsored, but users still need to be careful as changes are always being made.

A major controversy associated with search engine marketing is whether companies should be able to bid on the brand names or product names owned by their competition. Should Playstation be able to bid on the search term Xbox? This is an ongoing debate and even though Google has repeatedly changed its policy companies continue to complain.

Search engine marketing is an industry that is growing larger and becoming more useful every year. Google, Yahoo!, and Microsoft provide the three most useful tools for getting involved in SEM, but as with everything, you need to be careful with how you use it and make sure your SEM practices are ethical.

5 Successful Social Media Campaigns

Social media is still relatively new so marketers are still figuring out how to use it effectively. Here are a few campaigns who used social media properly and saw excellent results.

1. The Gap- Popular clothing retailer The Gap teamed up with online coupon dealer Groupon and offered $50 worth of clothes for just $25. 441,000 of these coupons were sold which generated $11 million in revenue for The Gap. Not bad for a promotion lasting one day. This campaign helped The Gap gain new customers that they may have never reached otherwise. The Gap hopes that these customers stay with them and don't shop at The Gap only when there are deals.

2. Mountain Dew- Mountain Dew ran a successful social media campaign based around the concept of DEWmocracy. Mountain Dew released three new flavors to the public and customers were then able to vote on which flavor they liked the best. The winning flavor would then be sold full time and the others would be canned. This campaign worked because it got customers involved and made them feel like they had a voice in the future of the Mountain Dew brand. This social media campaign generated buzz, which is always a good thing. The only downside is people whose flavors lost may feel betrayed by the company.

3. Old Spice- If you say "the Old Spice guy" to someone they immediately know who you are talking about. This shows how well Old Spice executed their campaign based around ridiculous commercials bending the laws of reality and pushing male bravado to a new level. Old Spice took to social media and had the Old Spice guy answers questions sent in by fans in a series of YouTube videos that generated a lot of views and created a buzz for Old Spice. Their sales haven't yet shown it, but Old Spice is growing as a brand name.

4. The Arcade Fire- Grammy-winning band the Arcade Fire used social media in an interesting way to generate hype for their album The Suburbs. They created an "interactive music video" that asked users for their address and then local landmarks were used as Arcade Fire's song "We Used to Wait" played. The experience was surreal as you saw a music video, but you could recognize all of the places in it. This innovative experience spread across the internet and gained Arcade Fire fans who had previously never heard of them.

5. The Blair Witch Project- Although much older than the other campaigns on this list there is no doubt it was an effective one. Before the release of the movie fake police reports and newspaper clippings were posted online about the teens that were supposedly taken by the "Blair Witch". This excited moviegoers as they felt they were experiencing a movie that was truly real. The success of this campaign can still be seen today as some people still mistakenly think the Blair Witch Project is actual footage of actual teens.

The Art Of Skip Tracing

If you have no clue what skip tracing is, then do not fret. The term skip tracing is a term used throughout the industries of debt collection, bounty hunting, private investigators, detectives, journalists, and anyone that is in a profession that searches for specific people. The term comes from the American idiom to "Skip Town". The people who "skip", are the people being searched for.

Information gathering is the essence of skip tracing. There are numerous databases to find information on the subject, and are utilized constantly. Other than the subject itself, the data can be used to find parties related to the subject, in order to get them to assist in identifying and locating the subject.

Examples of ways to Skip Trace: ZabaSearch, an online resource. Telephone directories. Marriage Licenses. Death Certificates. Real estate records. Checking if the skip has children in school, then checking the school district. Check Licensing agencies pending on the profession of the skip. Check unions if the skip was in a union.

Finding out as much information as possible about the skip is essential, then deducing the information to locate said skip is the hopeful final result. One specific tactic used by skip tracers is pretexting. Pretexting is the action of pretending to be someone else in order to extract information from others. Much of pretexting is legal, however in some cases it is illegal to use pretexting. This tactic requires the skip tracer to be a very creative person, in order to get the exact type of information they want without tipping someone off who they actually are. In general, states will have different laws about skip tracing, so if you are learning how to skip trace, make sure to check with your state on what you can and cannot do.

There are many types of skip tracing. This includes finding missing husbands and wives and other family members. Maybe you need to find someone who is in thousands of dollars of debt with you. When you need to find a person, a skip tracer is someone you will go to for help.
