Egyptians Use Twitter To Raise Over $200K In 1 week

By Weston Gardner

A new fundraising trend on Twitter has gained an explosion of exposure due to recent efforts in Egypt. Mahmoud Salem is one of the major players in the new Twitter movement in which companies donate money in return for PR. In the past week, Salem and his associates have used this system to raise over $200,000 for Ezbeit Khairallah a poor community in Cairo.

The money was collected from a variety of sources including companies and anonymous donors. Companies like Coca Cola made up a majority of donations, but anonymous donors contributed over $70,000. These funds in turn are being given to the NGO "Peace and Plenty."

The Egyptian activists have termed the operation "Tweetback." In return for the donations, donors receive tweets mentioning them from influential Egyptians. As a result, this system relies on the support of influential twitter users who can turn their tweets into massive advertisements. Indeed, the activists have shown themselves to be adept at pushing the limits of the tweetback system. Several influential journalists and activists were called in to support the campaign.

Each of the members has at least 15,000 followers, which grants companies access to spokesmen whose audience is fully composed of willing listeners. After all, the audience will have signed up to receive messages from them. As a result, this mode of advertising might prove to be uniquely effective due to the selective relationship between spokesman and audience.

The activists need to raise another $70,000 to reach their goal. In the next phase of the project the activists are shifting platforms and intend to raise the remaining money through crowd-sourcing. The shift displays both the savvy of the Egyptian activists and the constantly changing boundaries of the Internet. For example, it is reasonable to expect an increased presence of tweetback fundraising efforts riding the wave of Salem's success.

If tweetback efforts gain prominence, the advances could represent a significant advance forward in influential target advertising with the proper selection of causes and tweeters. Therefore, it is something to be aware of for the future. It's a very simple dynamic cause, and at the end of the day you're just tweeting.
