The Livermore Chamber of Commerce Connects on Social Media

By Thomas Petty

New social media tools give the Livermore Chamber of Commerce several ways to connect with the local community. Their free iPhone and Android app was announced publicly, and users of the app can connect with the chamber. The Livermore Chamber believes that they are the only San Francisco Bay Area chamber with a smart phone app.

As part of their strategy to connect to local businesses and the Tri-Valley community, they have also put in place the final two "legs" of their social media plan.

Many businesses and individuals have been using Twitter to communicate with the community. The chamber's Twitter id, @livermorechambr, will be used to connect with other local people and businesses and promote events and news that happen in their area.

As an example, at the recent summer luncheon at Concannon Vineyards in Livermore, the chamber encouraged attendees to use the #lccluncheon hashtag on Twitter. This allowed other attendees to follow the live conversation and connect with each other.

Dale Eldridge Kaye, president and CEO of the chamber said, "Twitter is new to us, so we're still learning. We want to use it to promote news about local businesses but have fun with it at the same time too."

The chamber launched a new blog and have been using Twitter to promote the articles, which include news and events about the local business community. They have several volunteer authors who will write articles about many topics, including local government, education, business and news.

Chamber members enjoy many benefits, but one important perk is to have their own press releases featured on the chamber's website. The blog will be used to host all future press releases and they'll be promoted through Twitter and Facebook.

As an example, Checkers Catering and Special Events, a local caterer, issued a press release that their Executive Chef, Kathleen Hoffman would be "donated" at an auction which benefits the Oakland Children's Hospital and Research Center on September 19. The press release has been featured on the chamber's blog and promoted on their social media connections.

Kaye exclaimed, "We're hoping that the local community and businesses will engage with us by following us on Twitter and Facebook and reading what's going on in our business community through our blog posts."
