Convention Planning Indianapolis Guide For Meeting Planners

By Mavis Roach

Meeting planners looking for a convention planning Indianapolis guide need to know only one word - ICCLOS. That's short for the Indiana Convention Center and Lucas Oil Stadium, which is the crown jewel of the Hoosier State's event and sporting venues. Let's take a closer look at the ICCLOS facilities, and some alternate venues like Conseco Fieldhouse and the State Fairgrounds.

ICC is spread over a 6-block downtown zone. Surrounding hotspots include Union Station, the State Capitol and the Circle Centre shopping and entertainment complex. Not to mention several large hotels in a six-block radius offering a combined 6,685 rooms. After an expansion in January 2011, the event and meeting space at ICC stands at a whopping 1.23 million square feet.

This space is spread over 71 meeting rooms, three ballrooms, and 11 exhibit halls. Then there's LOS, which opened in August 2008. It has been very well received by NFL fans as the new home of the Colts and the 2012 Super Bowl XLVI host. What's relevant here is that LOS offers 13,000 square feet in meeting rooms and exhibition space that can be expanded upto 183,000 square feet.

The retractable roof allows indoor/outdoor events. The house reduction curtain system allows for basketball games, conventions, concerts and other events with capacities that can vary from 15,000 to 70,000. An enclosed pedestrian corridor connects LOS, ICC and several of the big hotels and entertainment options.

Event organizers who need further information or quotes can contact the convention & visitors association (ICVA) or the ICCLOS management. It is worth noting that there are other venues worth considering. For instance, the Conseco Fieldhouse three blocks from the ICC is more suitable for a smaller event or sporting event where the audience is likely to be around or less than 5000.

A more flexible venue can be found at the State Fairgrounds, which is free before and after the August State Fair. The 15 buildings on offer include the Pepsi Coliseum. Organizers can organize small events which need just one building, or they can take over the entire space and even offer camping facilities for large crowds.

These three main venues aside, the hotels offer hundreds of thousands of additional square feet in event space and meeting rooms. It could even be said that all these convention planning Indianapolis tips create a problem of plenty for organizers. So select the right venue, and the rest will be taken care of by Hoosier State hospitality.
