Want To Make Your Marketing Resolutions Effective? Here's How

By Troy Jones

As with most New Year's Resolutions, marketing resolutions are seldom maintained past February. With the economy showing a slight recovery, and many positive outlooks being broadcast, this might be the year to revive your marketing efforts and make sure your prospects know who you are and what you offer. To have an effective marketing this year, try these resolutions.

Set new goals for the year once you've resurrected you're marketing plan, dusted it off, and updated it.

Look at new media opportunities and new ways to engage customers such as social media and blogging.

Another great idea would be setting realistic goals and to help you achieve them, you should set out the strategies as well.

It's important for your plan to have a time schedule otherwise you will never achieve them. Each tactic and strategy should have a timeline mapped out for them.

Measure the effectiveness of your tactics, and the progress made towards achieving your goals.

Don't be afraid to try something new, particularly if it breaks the mould for your industry. Traditional marketing tactics may have their place, but the ones being noticed are the companies who move into new areas.

Hiring a professional is something you need to consider. Professionals should design your advertising material such as your website, banner ad, brochure, direct mailshot, etc. Although much of it can be DIY, the result is not professional most of the time. Lift your company image above mediocre this year.

At the moment, content is king so creating a great content and then leveraging it to the max is what you should start thinking about.

Did we mention measurement?

Of course, no marketing plan will make any difference if it is not implemented. For each tactic and strategy, there should be clearly defined responsibilities and timelines. With a monthly marketing calendar, you can keep track of all that's involved, listing what needs to be done, who should do it and when can it be done. Send out a rate card at the end of each month which contains the results of the efforts, how much was achieved, and who deserves to be recognized for their achievement of their part of the strategy. If three or four people are going to get a report telling them you didn't do it, then it's more difficult to delay doing something even if you're the boss.
