The Workings Of Asbestos Surveys

By Bob Cratch

In the past, hazardous materials were used in various construction projects. This includes a substance which was commonly used for insulation and fireproofing homes. Now that people know it is deadly, it is important to have asbestos surveys done when homes are either renovated or destroyed.

In general, this substance is fairly harmless if left alone. However, if during construction, it is torn or damaged, it can release toxic fibers. Inhaled, these fibers can be deadly, causing lung cancer or severe inflammation in the lungs. In order to keep this from happening, asbestos surveys should be performed.

Generally, different areas have the same protocols and laws towards this survey. Still, it may vary slightly from area to area, due to the fact that individual local governments tend to be responsible for setting up these laws. Some may require it to be done only for older buildings, while others prefer that all construction projects should have this done. Nevertheless, having the examination can reduce the risk significantly.

If a building is known to contain this deadly insulator, one has two options. They could perform the examination on their own, providing they know the local protocols. It would be wise to ask the local government for their current regulations before doing so. If one isn't willing to do it on their own, they could ask for a government official to examine the house.

The process of the survey is very thorough. Inspectors examine almost all parts of the house, from the attics, pipes, any insulation, to flooring and tile. Samples of the various materials are taken and tested for any sign of the deadly fibers. Once the tests are complete, the results are released and the proper measures can be taken.

To prevent deadly illnesses from spreading, construction projects are required to perform asbestos surveys prior to beginning. Whether it is done professionally or without help, protocols must be followed and the materials must be tested. This ensures the safety of construction workers as well as the residents of the home.
