Historical And Contemporary Famous Graphic Designers

The history of famous graphic designers is fascinating. Many artists are well-respected for their creative blending of motion, typography and images to create engaging artwork. Their pieces are often produced for use on websites, as well as in advertisements, brochures and e-newsletters.

From his birth in Italy, 1730, Giambattista Bodini grew to become a well-respected publisher, printer and engraver. His grandfather and father also worked in the trade. Among his prominent employers were the Vatican and several wealthy, notable families. One of his most well-known and enduring contributions is the Bodini typeface.

Alexy Brodovitch was born in Russia in 1898. He was an instructor, photographer and artist. He's well-respected for his art direction of Harper's Bazaar from 1938 to 1958.

Paul Rand, whose birth was in Brooklyn, New York, 1914, is notorious for his creation of corporate logos. They include IBM, UPS, ABC, Steve Jobs' NexT, Enron and Westinghouse. He was an innovator of the Swiss style, which emphasizes readability, objectivity and cleanliness.

Born in New York City in 1929, Milton Glaser became a prominent industry artist. His globally-recognized I love New York logo gained him much notoriety. The black and red I-heart-N-Y logo was often seen on the t-shirt worn by musical legend, John Lennon. Glaser is also highly-regarded for his DC Comics logo, the DC bullet, which was featured from 1977 to 2005. He also created the logo for Brooklyn Brewery, and well-known Bob Dylan poster-art. In 1968, he was one of the co-founders of the New York Magazine.

Texan David Carson was born in 1952. He is popular for developing the grunge-typography style which emerged in the 1990s. His layouts for Ray Gun magazine featured distorted fonts and fractured images. He later served as art director for many music, surfing and skateboarding magazines.

From his birth in London in 1957, Neville Brody, grew to make many notable contributions. His album cover-art for musical artists like Depeche Mode and Cabaret Voltaire gained him wide-spread notoriety. Also, his layouts for The Face and Arena magazines increased his influence and popularity.

Ten years after Brody, Jonathan Ive was also born in London. He works as the main design artist for the mega-corporation, Apple, Inc. His layouts include artwork for the PowerBook G4, MacBook, iPod, iPhone, iPad and iMac.

A lot of famous graphic designers have been very influential in the industry. Most modern artists have been heavily influenced by their innovative predecessors. Even though techniques have continued to evolve, many artists remain committed to their industry's historical philosophy.
