The Private Investigator Profession

By Mark Adams

Everybody is astonished of what Sherlock Holmes a famous fictional private investigator can do with his cases. It seems like he can solve any cases he is hired for and he can find any lost person or things asked him to find. Our dear private investigators can do that too but do not expect too much, Sherlock Holmes is an exaggerated character of a private investigator.

A person that undertakes investigatory law services for an individual or for a group of people is called a private investigator also known as private detective. Private investigators work for law firms and help them gained evidence to solve a case. They also work for insurance companies and investigate company fraud and suspicious claims. They are also hired by wives and husbands who are suspicious about their partner.

Person's best fit for the private investigator job is ex-military, ex-spies, former body guards and security guards, previous law enforcement agents and former police officer. They are said to be good in this kind of job because they already know how the process of investigation works and they have already a physically fit body to do the job.

Private investigators are hired to investigate, they do not have police powers and they are not authorized to arrest or detained suspects. Private investigators as its name connotes is not a part to any government branch. Its duty is to investigate for the individual or group who hired him and not for the government. Though that is the case he is still entitled to make a testimony in court if needed and to present the evidence he gathered. In case he fails to follow the range of the law as a private investigator then he will face with legal charges.

Private investigators job is not limited to searching for a lost person or a lost valuable, nor is it not limited in just following a cheating husband and wife. Its scope of work ranges from working as a messenger in process serving. This is no ordinary messenger because what they deliver is legal documents like subpoenas and summon. Private investigator scope of job reaches to the corporate world as a corporate investigator who is responsible for the safety of intellectual properties, copy rights and solve issues regarding fraud and piracy.

Private investigator companies have grown in numbers because of the grown need to hire one especially in a world that everything must be proven to be believed. Today most private investigators preferred to be called as professional investigators or licensed private investigator. The reason for this is a private investigator job is not anymore a sideline job like what it used to be. Private investigator now is a form of profession and private investigators now is exerting more effort to establish the private detective industry as a respectable job like any other professions.
