Where Did The Idea Of Famous Company Logos Come From

By Byron Jonas

Many businesses are known today by the designs that are used in their advertising. There are a number of famous company logos that everyone knows instantly when the design is seen. However, most people have never given a thought to how the idea of branding products began.

Symbols have been used since early man used hieroglyphics to get their stories told. The different symbols that were used had very specific meanings attached to them. This type of artwork can be very powerful, as without a word, people can know exactly what is trying to be said.

Branding products with specific symbols goes back as far as the twentieth century. Thousands of years prior to that, people would recognize things by a marking or brand. Now businesses use their artwork and colors so that consumers will recognize the company. This is not much different from the days when the king's court was recognized by their coloring and crests.

After the start of the Industrial Revolution, manufacturers were able to mass-produce their products. This brought the products to more people than it ever had before. It also brought more competition to the consumers. Many of these businesses noticed that when they used a specific marking for their products, they were immediately recognized.

After advertising moved from the actual product, it began to show up in the printed media. This gave consumers everywhere the ability to locate a particular company's product strictly by the artwork associated with it. From the printed materials, it moved effortlessly into the television era. The infamous artwork for Music Television proved that the artwork longer needed to be consistent in its appearance. This logo was animated, broken, shattered, and changed in many ways as the viewer watched it happen.

Now the logo has evolved so that it is no longer a sign of quality but it is more of status and popularity. The products being advertised are offering the consumer many abilities that they supposedly can achieve when the product is purchased. Today, the logo has become a status symbol for many consumers.

Product branding is still being used every day. As the advances in technology are made, the designs are becoming more elaborate and evolved every day. Marketers are looking into finding new ways to improve their famous company logos to garner the most attention from the consumer.
