Basic Marketing For Non Profit Organizations

By Bruce Stevens

Basic marketing for non profit organizations includes one thing only, visibility. Whether on the Internet, in the media, or at businesses, personally being where people are every day is key to success. E-mails and letters are not sufficient, personal contact is needed.

When something important happens, let people know about it. Tell about it on the website, invite people to come, put out a news release, take pictures and write an article. Let others know what is happening and why it is important.

Check out the local radio and television stations. Most have free public service announcements for religious organizations and non profits. Find out who their targeted audience is, when to turn in the information, and how often it will be broadcast. Learn the process for developing news stories, including who decides what is aired and when.

Coverage through the press needs to be more selective as reporters and newspapers are not all alike. Check their publications for stories of human interest and find out who reported or wrote them. Speak to these people personally and find one who is agreeable to attend events sponsored. Keep records of communication with them, such as telephone calls, subjects discussed, personal visits, information that may be personal that is shared, and any communications on-line.

Use the Internet to gather names and addresses, both regular and e-mail. A website helps people see that the organization is real, and has ways to accept donations on-line. This increases visibility and financial reserves for causes supported. Visitors need free things they can sign up for, like newsletters, visits with someone in the organization, or requesting a speaker for an event they sponsor.

Marketing for non profit organizations does not have to be expensive, but it does take work. Whether it is foot work and fancy work, someone representing the organization needs to personally be in the public eye and ready to make a contact for whatever needs to be done.
