Want To Make Your Marketing Resolutions Effective? Here's How

By Sue Ellis

Just like most New Year's Resolutions, seldom maintained past February are marketing resolutions. With the economy showing a slight recovery, and many positive outlooks being broadcast, this might be the year to revive your marketing efforts and make sure your prospects know who you are and what you offer. To have an effective marketing this year, try these resolutions.

Resurrect your marketing plan, dust it off, update it and set new goals for the year.

Social media and blogging are new media opportunities and new ways to engage customers and it would be a good idea to look into them.

Set realistic goals and set out the strategies that will help you achieve them.

A plan without a time schedule will never be achieved. A timeline should be mapped out for each strategy and tactic.

The progress made towards achieving the goals you've set and effectiveness of your tactics should be measured.

Trying something new, especially if it breaks the mold of your industry, is not a bad idea and you shouldn't be afraid of it. Traditional marketing tactics may have their place, but the ones being noticed are the companies who move into new areas.

Hire a professional. Your advertising material such as your website, direct mailshot, brochure, banner ad, etc., should be designed by professionals. Although much of it can be DIY, the result is not professional most of the time. Make this the year that you lift your company image above mediocre.

Content is king at the moment, so start thinking about how to create great content and then leverage it to the max.

Was the measurement mentioned?

Of course, no marketing plan will make any difference if it is not implemented. For each tactic and strategy, there should be clearly defined responsibilities and timelines. With a monthly marketing calendar, you can keep track of all that's involved, listing what needs to be done, who should do it and when can it be done. Sending out a rate card that includes how much was achieved, who needs to be recognized for their achievement of their part of the strategy, and what the results of the efforts were is what needs to be done at the end of each month. It is far more difficult to delay doing something if three or four people are going to get a report telling them you didn't do it - even if you're the boss!
