How To Go About Brochure Printing

By Danielle Russell

If you know where you stand budget-wise and know just what you need, brochure printing should be a breeze for you. Whether used for real estate, trade show or promotional purposes, or for displaying statistical information, brochures are one of the best tools you can use for promotion.

First you'll need a message, then you'll need text and photos or graphics to spread the message effectively. Then choose the type of printing that best suits your brochure. Brochures are typically printed in more than one color.

There are two basic choices in printing: offset printing and laser or digital printing. Both printing processes are capable of producing large quantities of high-quality documents. Most high quality, full-color commercial printing is done on offset presses using the four-color process. Offset printing is done by spreading ink on a metal plate as it gets filtered through etchings onto an intermediary surface - the image is placed to paper by pressing the intermediary surface onto it. Although set-up costs can be relatively high, the actual printing is generally inexpensive.

As for laser printing (also known as digital printing), this uses a laser beam to create the image, much in the same way a copy machine would work. One reason why offset printing is much preferred is because the images created are much crisper and higher in resolution. Being that you can go to your nearest copy store, or print images on even a small laser or inkjet printer, laser printing is considerably less expensive than offset, and is best recommended for small-scale requirements.

Choosing paper is another very important aspect of brochure printing. A lot of printing services advise customers to use heavier, glossy paper or coated paper to make their brochures look more attractive.

Also keep in mind the folding of your brochure. You can choose standard folding styles such as the single fold or half fold, or be innovative and go for a tri-fold, where the left and right flaps open, or the Z-fold, which opens in the same way an accordion would. Almost all printers will give you a greater discount the more you print.

Brochure printing can be easy and fun and allow for a good deal of self-expression, so go ahead, what are you waiting for? Gentlemen, start your printers!
