Link Building Basics And Tips

By Bruce Showalter

Link building is the core component of internet marketing and offsite search engine optimization (SEO). Both these things are for traffic acquisition. The point here is that it is necessary to run a campaign to acquire links in order to ramp up a website's visibility and get more search engine traffic.

It's not really necessary here to go into how more links improve search rankings. It does, and in a rather big way, so let's just buckle up and start acquiring some links. No doubt it's possible to just start rolling without a plan. But in order to get some long term benefit from it there has to be a plan, and if possible also a team.

There are many things that need to be done, including outreach to other websites in the same industry sector and social media outreach. The website has to be submitted to directories, and articles with bylines can be submitted to content aggregators. Post comments on various blogs and forums, with a linkback to the website included in the signature.

There are many tricks of the trade and methods which only a seasoned professional can manage. The most important is the ability to find high value domains and reach out to their webmasters for a link deal. What kind of a deal can be arranged for is a big issue, since there are many possibilities.

For instance, it could be a site-wide link swap, or between home pages, category pages or deep links to specific pages inside. The arrangement can be a two way or three way exchange. Then there are organic links - these are extremely important, but hard to get since they're provided naturally within blog posts or page content on other blogs and sites.

The end game here is to get as many incoming links as possible, and they should be from popular sites that are in the same space and have similar content. Note that other than creating keyword-targeted content, link building is the single most important thing that helps with traffic acquisition. Let's just say that it is essential and has to be done right.
