How To Manage A More Humanitarian Venture

By Naomi N. Juergens

I've recently studied the ways to run a more humanitarian enterprise, and by doing so have uncovered a new comprehension of what that means. A business that takes care to have positive, conscious interactions with the entities it is connected to in some way is a humanistic business indeed. A simpler way of putting it is: it acts in the best interest of everyone involved.

What is incredible to me is that the more a business incorporates humanitarian elements, the more it can drive the humans involved in the business to better success. Business has the unique capacity to inspire an exploration of human achievement and realization.

The only disadvantage I can imagine being expressed about a humanitarian business might come from a someone who is not interested in making mutually beneficial scenarios between stakeholders' work. I could see that can be effective in the short term, but with a team of people (and a happy one at that), so much more can be accomplished in the long run.

Who exactly are the stakeholders and what can one experience from a business that employs humanitarian practices? The investors in the business are one of the stakeholders. Because of the innovation and/or risk they've invested, and ideally the value they bring to the community and/or world, I think the humanitarian thing would be to reward them with profits. Quality goods are a given feature a customer would expect from a good business operating with humanitarian efforts in mind. Perhaps the best way to honor employees for their labor and innovation is through fair wages and a good, thriving environment they will love to work in. The local community benefits through eco-conscious efforts of a business, and through the contributions of a thriving economy. Suppliers, vendors, and partners benefit and could expect fair compensation for a quality product, thus perpetuating fair exchange between businesses. In general there is much abundance to be had if each of the above elements is treated with equal amounts of care.

Humanity can be furthered in the workplace through the reward of effort and quality. This emphasizes the creation of value, and the exchange that is present from all other stakeholders, which serves as a great incentive. This type of business model really has the capacity to have a ripple effect of influence upon an entire community and beyond. Whole Foods is a perfect example of a company that strives to incorporate these ideals throughout the enterprise and community. The company was founded on these principles and has affected not only the well-being of large numbers of people, but has inspired thousands to create a positive, eco-conscious contribution to society.

Also take NXIVM as an example. As an organization, NXIVM has been very effective in planting seeds of humanitarian action in communities across the globe through their effective methods and processes they present in different programs and workshops they offer. There is a great deal of potential to uncover, and humanitarian businesses hold a very unique position in their ability to affect positive change.
