Becoming a Great Public Speaker Can Advance Your Career

By Jack McMartin

There is an amazing phenomenon that occurs constantly in the modern world. Individuals that are excellent at presenting in public move forward faster in their companies than people that don't. We'll take, for example, the current U.S. president, Barack Obama. He rose to the highest career position that's possible in the world primarily based on what? While he may have a certain amount of professional experience, his comprehensive resume was much weaker compared with that of most former presidents. As a black American, he also had to transcend difficult racial barriers to be elected president. One could make a strong case for why he wasn't completely ready to take on the job of president or why the country wouldn't want to elect him (see reasons above).

Yet he emerged as a celebrity. Why? I believe a key reason is his amazing public speaking proficiency. His natural ability to capture an audience is unmatched over the past two decades in the political world. Not even Bill Clinton, who was renowned as a great public speaker compares. This is also true for former President Reagan. No one would've dreamed an actor could be elected as president. Nevertheless it happened to some extent because of Reagan's skill before a crowd. So just what exactly does any of this have to do with you and me?

What it means is that public speaking is a competency we really need to master. If we want to reach our potential, it isn't something we can do without. Add this competency to an already strong set of skills and talents and you'll have a powerful combination. So why not begin working on your presentation skills now. There a lot of resources to help you out and tons of services to make you more effective.

Study clips of great speeches. Figure out how to design excellent PowerPoint presentations. Find a company that offers PowerPoint presentation design services to do it for you. Read up on how to rise above the phobia of speaking in public.

This is a talent you can't afford to disregard. If you just put a little bit of effort into developing this skill set, you'll be amazed at what it will do for your career.
